About Montenegro

The Adriatic coast of Montenegro is 293 kilometers long. Of this stretch 73 kilometers are beaches, from where the great "black mountains" (hence, the 15th century Latinized name – Montenegro) soar to Bobotov Kuk 2,522 m above the coastline of sheltered bays, with year-around skiing, the big winter resorts now under development by foreign investors.

Some beaches are only a few meters long and accessed by boat only. Others go as far as the eye can see; the longest one is almost 13 kilometers long south of the (in)famous Mediterranean pirates-occupied city of Ulcinj bordering on Albania, where more than 2,000 slaves were sold per day in the Middle Ages.

Some are only small man-made concrete platforms, protruding from the rocky crags dropping straight down in the bluest sea waters in the world. Others consist of coarse gravel, and a few are of finest sand one can find anywhere...

Most of the beaches are managed by the Budva based company “Morsko Dobro” or Coastal Authority, which is a Government owned entity. The blue and red signs point out even hidden beaches that are not easy to find.

Incredible diversity

Current map of Montenegro, with Budva accented on the Montenegrin Littoral as the focal point of national tourism on which the economy is largely based. This chart was published after the May 21, 2006 Referendum, hence declaration of independence of Montenegro, regained after 88 years of Serbian tutelage, however Montenegrin statehood relatively speaking is respecttively twice older than Serbia and thee times than Russia. Its proto-Slavic origin, and strategic location in the south of Europe gives it a natural geopoliticalfocus as a positive force in an emerging new common-wealth of nations. Source: World Factbook
